Cadillac's new two-seat sports car, dressed with composite body panels featuring chiseled forms and angular features, is a luxurious hardtop coupe that converts to an event, which consumes less than 30 seconds, drops sideglass windows, lifts the metal lid with lectromechanical muscle and tucks it neatly into the trunk, leaving a smooth and flat bonnet trailing integrated roll bars positioned behind seatbacks.
The high-tech look foretells a high-tech slant to technical features. For instance, cruise control on XLR is a computerized system with on-board radar. It draws on the Doppler effect in radar to measure the distance to a car ahead in the coupe's path, then adjusts the throttle or applies brakes to maintain a pre-set minimum distance between the two vehicles. Further, there are motion sensors all over XLR that detect lateral as well as linear slippage of the vehicle and communicate with a computer to magically correct the dangerous movements without direct steering or braking action from the driver.
And XLR is the first GM vehicle with keyless technology. Just put the car's keyfob in a pocket or purse and the car will recognize you electronically. Driver's door unlocks automatically when you touch the door handle. To start the engine, simply step on the brake pedal and depress the Start button. The 2008 Cadillac XLR Roadster (convertible) mid-size sports car is the Corvette of Cadillacs, literally. The car is built on the same Y-body platform as the Chevrolet Corvette and in the same plant. The XLR has a Cadillac Northstar V8 engine, while its sibling the Corvette uses the General Motors LS2, V8 power plant.
The Cadillac XLR is available in two trim levels the base XLR Roadster (MSRP $81,490), and the XLR Platinum (MSRP $86,490). This luxury roadster sports car competes with the Audi TT Convertible, BMW Z4 M, Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Ford Mustang GT and the Lexus SC 430. The XLR is equipped with a 320-horsepower, 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine, 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive.
Cadillac introduced the XLR concept car at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show, and it entered production in the 2004 model year.  It is currently assembled in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Its predecessors were the Cadillac Eldorado and Cadillac Allante.
The Cadillac XLR has front and rear stabilizer bars, double wishbone front and rear suspension, and active four-wheel independent suspension.
Exterior features of the Cadillac XLR include 18 x 8.0" polished alloy wheels, run flat tires, and a power-retractable hard top. It also has intermittent wipers, a glass rear window, and a rear defogger.
Cadillac XLR instrumentation features include an external temperature display, a trip computer, a heads-up display, and a clock. It also has a tachometer, a compass, and low fuel level warning indicator.
Seats and trim features in the Cadillac XLR include seating for two in eight-way, height-adjustable, multi-level heating, power bucket front seats with power adjustable lumbar support, leather upholstery, a leather-and-wood steering wheel and shift knob, and alloy trim on dash. It also has alloy and wood trim on doors, and alloy, leather, and wood trim on the center console.
The Cadillac XLR basic convenience features include adaptive cruise control, speed-proportional power steering, and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel with switches for the audio and cruise controls. It also has front cupholders, a remote trunk release, front door pockets, and a cargo net. Keyless ignition, a front console with storage, a universal remote transmitter, a 12V front power outlet, and retained accessory power are also standard convenience features on the Cadillac XLR.
The Cadillac XLR basic comfort features include an electrochromatic inside rear-view mirror, dual zone climate controls for driver and passenger, and interior air filtration. It also has front reading lights, dual-illuminating vanity mirrors, front floor mats, and a trunk light.
