BMW's two-seat roadster, produced at a BMW plant in South Carolina, transforms for 2003 into an upgraded second-generation design featuring a racy exterior, larger engines and more equipment aboard. Even the name grows -- from Z3 to Z4. The package size expands due to a longer wheelbase and broader track which forge a larger vehicle with more room in the cockpit. Two engines enrich the new roadster. Z4 2.5i gets the BMW 2.5-liter in-line-six tuned to 184 hp with transmission choices of a five-speed manual or Steptronic five-speed automatic. Z4 3.0i brings a 3.0-liter six worth 225 hp and either a six-speed manual or the Steptronic automatic. Later in the year, BMW's sequential manual shifter will also be available. Suspension upgrades for Z4 come out of 3-Series cars with modifications plus a new trapezoidal-link arrangement at the rear, with DSC stability control on hand as well as run-flat tires. The convertible's soft top with optional power controls contains a glass rear window and heat element plus a tight tonneau cover.

Options & Features
BMW's two-seat sports car ' the Z4 -- carries angular sheet metal styling that looks edgy and quick.
It can be quick to act too, thanks to two different engine options. The Z4 2.5i gets BMW's 2.5-liter, in-line-six tuned to 184-hp. The Z4 3.0i packs a larger straight-six at 3.0-liters with dual overhead cams, and BMW's infinitely variable valve timing system. Output reaches 225-hp.
A Getrag five-speed manual ties to the 2.5-liter plant, while the heavy-duty ZF six-speed manual works with the 3.0-liter version. Both offer a ZF five-speed automatic with Steptronic mode, and that six-speed SMG is available with the larger engine.
Passive standard safety systems extend from frontal and side-impact air bags to BMW's knee protection system (KPS).
The cockpit for two stocks bolstered bucket seats, a three-spoke steering wheel and twin binnacles on the dash housing an analog speedometer and tachometer.
Z4's soft top contains a glass rear window and heat element. It folds back quickly by manual means, but power to fold the top automatically ...

Complete 2008 BMW Z4 New Car Reviews listed below
The 2008 BMW Z4 compact sports car is another superb product from BMW. It has a great design with an elegant interior. It is a light-weight, sexy car that is a vast improvement over its predecessor the Z3. The Z4's design is complex with multiple seam matching, and none of the chassis flex problems that the Z3 had, making it a great car to drive that handles well. It is a testimony to the manufacturing capabilities of BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. The coupe version is stunning, handles a bit better than the roadster, and could only be improved with the addition of a sun- or moon-roof.
The Z4 sports car is available in coupe (MSRP $40,400 - $50,100) and convertible (MSRP $36,400 - $52,100) versions. The BMW 3.0si Z4 coupe comes with a 255-horsepower, 3.0-liter I6 engine. It competes with the Audi TT, Chevrolet Corvette Coupe, Chrysler Crossfire Coupe Limited, Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe, Infiniti G37 Coupe, Lotus Exige S, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, Nissan 350Z Coupe, and Porsche Cayman.
The BMW Z4 3.0i Roadster (convertible) comes with a 215-horsepower, 3.0-liter I6 engine, while the BMW Z4 3.0si Roadster comes with a 255-horsepower, 3.0-liter I6 engine. The Z4 convertibles compete with the Audi TT convertible, Chrysler Crossfire Roadster, Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible, Honda S2000, Lotus Elise, Mazda Miata, Nissan 350Z Roadster, Pontiac Solstice GXP, Porsche Boxster, and the Saturn Sky Red Line.
All versions can be customized with a variety of option packages and accessories and come standard with a rear-wheel drive system and six-speed manual transmission. The manual-shift Steptronic automatic transmission system with paddle shifters is optional - but we highly recommend getting it as it is fun and provides tremendous vehicle controlled.
Basic features include four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, power- and speed-sensing steering, speed control, illuminated entry, tilt telescoping steering wheel, and a driver's vanity mirror. Memory seat, auto-dimming rear view mirror, Global Positioning System, and BMW Assist roadside assistance are optional on all trim levels.
