This compact-class SUV goes by the tag of X3. A forceful in-line six-cylinder engine fits in front of the four-door passenger compartment that comprises two rows of seats for five riders, and the cargo bay at the rear accessible through a roof-hinged tailgate.

X3 stocks the xDrive electronically-controlled AWD mechanism. Off pavement, X3 adds another device called Hill Descent Control (HDC) to keep all wheels firmly planted on a steep slope.

For power, BMW brings two in-line six-cylinder plants, as model nomenclature follows engine patterns -- X3 2.5i and X3 3.0i. X3 2.5i contains a 2.5-liter unit producing 184-hp. X3 3.0i gets a 3.0-liter version with 225-hp. Each engine shows a sporty ZF six-speed manual or five-speed Steptronic automatic shifter.

X3's cabin is impressive in design and content. Models draw from a long list of standard features, including extensive safety equipment. Packages load additional gear, such as the premium package with vast Panoramic Roof plus auto...

Complete 2008 BMW X3 SUV New Car Reviews listed below

The 2008 BMW X3 SUV (MSRP $38,000) is a compact, near-luxury SUV based on the 3 Series platform but is only slightly smaller than the BMW X5 SUV. X3 3.0si has the same great handling as the 3 Series sedans. If you don't need the luxury of the X5, the X3 is a great, lower-cost alternative. The BMW X3 SAV competes with the Acura RDX, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti FX35, Land Rover LR3, Lexus RX350, Mazda CX-7, and Volvo XC90. It comes with a 260-horsepower, 3.0-liter, I6 engine, all-wheel drive system, and six-speed Steptronic manual shift automatic transmission.

Basic features include four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, power-dependent and speed-sensing steering, power moonroof, memory seat, speed control, tilt steering wheel, driver vanity mirror, power driver and front passenger seats, and genuine wood dashboard, door panel, and console inserts. Optional features include sport suspension, head restraints memory, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming rear view mirror, garage door transmitter, BMW Assist roadside assistance, heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, and a sport steering wheel.

Entertainment features include AM/FM/Satellite-capable radio, single CD player, six-disc remote CD player with MP3 capability, radio data system, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and eight speakers.

Lighting, instrumentation, and visibility features include variably intermittent wipers, speed-sensitive and rain-sensing wipers, rear window wiper, rear window defroster, tachometer, outside temperature display, front and rear reverse-sensing system, trip computer, and a low tire pressure warning indicator. High-intensity discharge headlights, headlight cleaning, and a compass are optional.

Safety and security features include 4-wheel disc brakes, front and rear vented disc brakes, 4-wheel Antilock Braking System (ABS), hill hold feature, adjustable driver and front passenger tilting head restraints), traction control, and occupant-sensing airbags (driver and passenger front and side impact, overhead impact). Rear side impact airbag, panic alarm, security system, and power-adjustable front head restraints are optional.

A reliability report from ConsumerReports.org for 2007 (major redesigns in 2004) showed that the BMW X3 received excellent ratings for its engine, transmission, drive, electrical, and climate system, suspension, brakes, exhaust, and paint and trim, very good ratings for its fuel system and squeaks and rattles, good ratings for its audio system, and poor ratings for its power equipment and body hardware. The BMW X3 is based on the BMW 3 Series platform, and has won the Canadian Car of the Year's Best New Sport Utility Vehicle in 2005. Despite being ra...
